This is the quintessential Sri Lanka cultural day – the combination of Sigiriya, a 5th-century royal fortress rising 200 metres above the jungle canopy and Dambulla, five cave shrines carrying 1st-century BC frescoes, covers two of Sri Lanka’s greatest archaeological achievements in a single arc. The day begins pre-dawn to beat both the heat and the crowds, with the climb itself a genuine physical undertaking rewarded, at the summit, by 360-degree views across the entire Cultural Triangle and the ruins of a royal citadel most visitors never expected to find at the top of a rock. The afternoon shifts register entirely at Dambulla, where the cool, dim cave interiors and their two-thousand-year-old painted ceilings make for an atmospheric, contemplative close to the day.
