Galle Fort is a living UNESCO heritage site – not a museum but an inhabited town inside a Dutch colonial sea fortification on the southern tip of Sri Lanka. What makes it extraordinary is the coral-stone architecture, the ramparts with the Indian Ocean on three sides and a layered history running through Portuguese, Dutch and British hands, all still visible in the walls if you know where to look. Over the past two decades the fort’s residential lanes have quietly transformed into boutique hotels, independent bookshops, design studios and some of Sri Lanka’s best restaurants, giving the day as much to eat and browse as to photograph. The southern coast drive down from Colombo, passing through Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna, adds a genuinely scenic dimension to the day before you even reach the fort gates.
