Udawalawe is Sri Lanka’s most accessible and most reliably productive elephant park – large herds of wild Asian elephants move through open grassland and along the edges of the Udawalawe reservoir in plain sight throughout the day. Unlike Yala’s dense scrub and dramatic but unpredictable wildlife viewing, Udawalawe offers almost guaranteed close-up elephant encounters in clear, open terrain, making it exceptional for photography and particularly satisfying for families. The optional Elephant Transit Home add-on – a government rehabilitation programme for orphaned wild elephant calves – is one of the most genuinely moving wildlife encounters in Sri Lanka.
